The Real Us

I am Brave and Beautiful – a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. Our blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and we  joined in!! Colbie’s song says, “Take your make up off. Let your hair down… Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you… “

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.

Both of us, along with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on. You don’t need a blog either! Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag – #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat’s attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!

Are you brave and beautiful? We are, here we go!

Here I am – Pam!  I know this is going to sound funny… but when I thought about what I was going to write with this “REAL” photo, I suddenly jumped back to my 17 year old self and my love for the movie Crazy Beautiful.  My mother hated that I loved this movie.  The main character wasn’t the best example.  And honestly, I don’t think I took from the movie exactly what they wanted me to.  But, at the end of it, there is quote that I have always loved:

“There are millions of people in this world, but in the end it all comes down to one. I still panic sometimes, forget to breathe, but I know that there’s something beautiful in my imperfections; the beauty that he held up for me to see. The strength that I will never be able to say.”  – Nicole in Crazy Beautiful

In the movie she met a boy that helped her see all the beauty in her crazy imperfections.  I loved that… and I knew someday I would meet a guy that helped me see beauty in my imperfections (insecurities).  But, as the years when on, I am proud to say that I was able to start seeing some of that beauty myself.  Everyone is different and everyone is beautiful.   It’s really just about seeing beauty in your imperfections!

Lisa Henderson without makeup

Lisa here. I am what most people call a “late bloomer.” I never wore make-up in High School and could have been voted least fashionable (or bushiest eyebrows! LOL!). I grew up with all boys and just didn’t care about that stuff. In college that started to change slowly. But my Junior year, I found myself. There is no other way to put it. I went to Romania for 3 months and volunteered in an orphanage with 4 people I didn’t know and there was zero access to anything familiar. All of the things that I would normally rely on and distract myself with were gone. I only had myself and my faith in God to carry me through the day to day life I lived.

That is when I really started to bloom.

I came home a different person. All of a sudden I was comfortable with who I was because I had learned who I really was inside. My faith had deepened so much and become real, not just something I learned about in church. I had learned that I really liked my 20 year old self. That started to show on the outside. I started caring more about clothes and makeup and the outside started reflected what was inside.

That is what real beauty is to me. Confidence that comes from being comfortable and happy with who you are. So much of my confidence comes from my faith and belief in a loving God who knows and cares about me personally. The make up, clothes, and accessories are not making up for what I lack inside. I wear them because they help me reflect what is inside. They have never and will never define my beauty. So this picture, its not hard for me to share. I am a work in progress and am FAR from perfect. I still beat up on myself for things I wish I was better at and want to change. But I am doing my best and as cliche as it is, that is what truly matters most.
