When Caleb was little I was so excited to do Gingerbread houses with graham crackers. Ummm – FAIL! Every time we touched the walls they would fall. It was so frustrating, especially for a 1 year old! So we set that tradition aside to save my sanity! This year I saw a rice krispy treat house and thought that is the way to go! I thought it would be awesome to make them brown too so they looked even more like a gingerbread house.
I improvised to make Chocolate Rice Krispy treats and then I also used my Moms buttercream frosting for the decorating. So yummy! In order to shape the houses better I actually made them in bread pans.
I cut one of the pans into thirds to shape the base of the house.
Then I cut another one of the pans in half and then cut each half on the diagonal.
I cut them when the krispes were still a little warm so they could still be shaped. At one point I even shoved one of the tops into the corner of the pan to help give it better shape.
Then you just place the roof onto the box and then smooth the two pieces together.
We filled muffin tins with candy and set the kids to work. By the way – this is an awesome way to use up Halloween candy!
It was a blast and so fun to see what the kids came up with!
I put toothpicks on the table so they could use them to spread frosting, but they used them more creatively 🙂
The best part…no walls falling!!!
