Simple and frugal. Those are the two words that have best described this holiday season for my family so far. They are also the best words to start this tutorial on DIY Twig Christmas Stars.
Hi, I’m Rebekah Schwind and I’m one of the contributors here at Over the Big Moon. I also have my own little blog called Charming Imperfections and would be delighted to have you over for a visit, but don’t go yet! It will only take a few minutes and a few cheap supplies to make these precious stars.
Supplies for DIY Twig Christmas Stars
- Twigs- as straight as possible (willow works well). You’ll need 5 of the same length for one star.
- Hot glue gun
- Twine or string for hanging
- Spray paint
The best part about this tutorial is that you probably won’t need to get in the car to go shopping. At least, I didn’t. Everything I needed was found around or outside our home. This is awesome because we are trying to have a very frugal Christmas this year.
The size of your star is up to you. I made everything from a two footer to a 6 inch one.
So, grab two of your sticks and glue them together at the top. This will be the top point of your star.
Lay one stick across the front of those, gluing wherever it meets another and you have the top of the “arms”. The two “legs” are attached in the same manner.
You may want to wrap some string or twine around the joints in the middle for extra reinforcement.
At this point, I decided to give some a little sparkle and spray painted them silver. This is a great time to get creative with decorating and paint! When you are done, simply hang them by a thread or twine.
I used these stars in several places for our Christmas décor. This mobile was a quick and easy DIY using the same glue-twigs-together-and-tie-with-twine method.
Some were hung from this chicken wire frame which appeared here on Over the Big Moon a few months back!
And this big boy was showcased on its own.
Whether you are in a money crunch this year or just loving rustic simplicity, these stars are lovely and so easy to make! All you need are some twigs, glue, and string, and your home could be sparkly too.
Remember that invite to come and visit my blog? Well, if you liked this post, I’ve got a few projects just like it that you are going to love! See you there!
