Combine the water, sugar, and root beer concentrate in a large pitcher or bowl. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Taste test to make sure you're happy with the flavor. Feel free to add more of the sugar or root beer concentrate if preferred. Depending on the brand of root beer concentrate you may need to add a little more.
Refrigerate until you're ready to serve.
Once ready to serve, carefully add the dry ice to the drink. Break the dry ice into small pieces if you want it to dissolve quickly and just cool the drink. If you want the drink to smoke and bubble, then keep your dry ice pieces larger.
Serve with a ladle.
Notes
Note: You can serve the drink while it's still smoking and bubbling from the dry ice, but be careful not to serve any pieces of the dry ice. While dry ice is perfectly safe to ingest once it's melted, it can be harmful to touch or ingest before it melts. See the safety information below!
Dry Ice Information:
Dry ice is the frozen form of carbon dioxide, which is why, instead of melting into a liquid when heated, it turns into a gas.Buy the dry ice just hours before planning on using it. Dry ice doesn’t last very long. It takes about 24 hours for five pounds of dry ice to turn from solid to gas — even when stored in a cooler.Dry Ice is below freezing temps, at -109.3°F. This is why if it comes in contact with your skin for more than a few seconds, you could get frostbite (you've probably heard that dry ice can burn you, but it's really frostbite). The same goes for inside your mouth if served in your drink. Always use thick gloves or tongs when handling dry ice.The best place to store dry ice when brought home is in a styrofoam container or cooler. It will help keep the dry ice cooler, while still allowing the gas to be released safely as it melts. If you have any leftover dry ice, it's best to allow it to melt by running warm water over it to dispose of it.
Tips for making Homemade Rootbeer:
Do not use a metal spoon to stir the mixture together. Using a metal spoon can make the Rootbeer taste like metal.I prefer the taste of the rootbeer if it is made about an hour before serving.
