So, last year we had an Elf on the Shelf family crisis! I live in Southern Utah, along with my parents and 3 older sisters (my little brother is in Northern Utah). That being the case, all of our kids are super close and are together a lot. Basically, what happened last year was that one of my 6 year old nephews didn’t believe in the Elf on the Shelf and decided to prove it to two of his other cousins. He went from one sisters house to another sisters house and did the same exact thing – grabbed their families Elf, tossed him on the ground and at one of their houses even stepped on him some.
As most of you are aware – you are not supposed to touch your Elf. If you touch your Elf, they will lose their magic and then they won’t be able to fly back to the North Pole each night to report to Santa.
My 5 year old nephew in particular was BEYOND devastated. He is just a believer in everything and was sure that his Elf was dead. He cried so hard that at one point he was literally hyperventilating. My sister called my mom (who I happened to be with ) and was telling her what happened. We were at Target at the time and immediately an idea popped into my head. I jumped into my car, drove home and came up with the idea for the Elf on the Shelf Magical Recovery Kit.
I grabbed some Red Glitter and Green Glitter and put in a baggie. I then proceeded to create a letter and certificate from the North Pole that told my nephews that if they sprinkled this Magical North Pole Dust on their Elf that when they woke up the next morning their Elf would be all better. I literally threw the idea together in 15 minutes. We door bell ditched it to their houses and it TOTALLY did the trick! If anything, it made them believe even more!
Because, last years “edition” wasn’t my best work – I decided to fix it up a bit and share it with you all. I’ve gotta assume that there are other houses out there that have had the same crisis happen to them!
So, here it is, the Elf on the Shelf Magical Recovery Kit! Included in the Kit is a Poem from Santa, Certificate of Health for their Elf and Bag Toppers for the Elf Magical Recovery Dust!
To create your Magical Recovery Kit get glitter of any color (aka Magical Recovery Dust) and put it in a ziploc bag. You are welcome to use the provided bag topper if you’d like. Print out the Poem from Santa and leave it with the “Magic Recovery Dust” on your door step with the Letter from Santa.
The Poem reads:
Santa heard Elf is feeling blue His magic is fading fast St. Nick’s powers are strong and true And Elf’s sadness will not last With a wiggle of His nose Santa will make it better Your elf will be aglow With more magic than ever Sprinkle this dust on Elf For the problem it will fix He’ll be back on the Shelf Thanks to one of Kris Kringel’s tricksThen, the next morning you can have your kid(s) find your families Elf, along with the Elf Certificate of Health next to him! All will be right in the world again!
I hope this helps keep your Elf on the Shelf Magic alive through the whole Holiday Season! Be sure to check out our Elf on the Shelf Page to check out more posts to help you make your Elfing experience magical and fun!

Thank you this is perfect!!!!!

Do you have an Elf Recovery Certificate for a girl Elf?
Pam Dana
I don’t! But, I have that on the schedule for next year!!
Krampus
First of all, that 6yr old boy sounds wretched and should be punished. Even if he doesn’t “believe”, you don’t go around to people’s houses and throw their belongings on the ground and step on them. Especially when it caused so much distress to his cousins. Instead of focusing on a ‘kit’ to revive the elves, perhaps some punishment for the 6yr old would be in order.

Thank you SO much!

Pam – great idea! I’ve got a two-year-old who we tried to introduce Elf to this year. Unfortunately, we discovered the age of two is not associated with self-control or a desire to maintain Elvish Magic. I faked a phonecall to Santa and asked if he’d please let Annie touch her elf just this year!

i keep getting an error when i download this. i’m afraid one of these times my 3 year old will get our Bear and i will need this can you help?
Michelle Stafford

Pam Dana
Oh no! Yes, the Magical Recovery Kit is available to download for free in the post!

I made this today, based on your idea…as our 2 year old touched our elf Clyde last night, so my husband put him up for the day, to return tomorrow…
“You touched your elf, but never fear,
I brought a fresh batch of Christmas cheer,
To replenish his magic, and make him all well.
Your elf Clyde, just needed to rest for a spell.
Make sure you take good care from now on,
Not to touch your elf and his magic be gone.
I replenished his magic, this isn’t a trick,
Just a smidge of Christmas spirit from good old St. Nick.
~Love, Santa”
Loved your “Elfisms” too!
Stephanie Drenth
how do your elves remain untouched when they are posed with the kids toys, etc.?
SuzanA
I try to put them where they can move their toys without touching our elf. Usually near a wall or on a table. also, I try not to use toys that they play with on a daily basis.
Stephanie Drenth
Good ideas; my husband came up with a good one while I was out of town and he was on elf duty: our elf (Froopie) was holding one of my son’s trains and Froopie magically let go of it while he was in the bathroom! Brilliant!
I also used a pair of kitchen tongs once when Froopie accidentally fell down.
Chris
I just cannot thank you enough for this! You have no idea. Two weeks ago this saved my little one’s broken heart!

Our elf Jingles fell out of his spot the other day, my daughter was freaking out because she knew she couldn’t touch him. I quickly played a ringtone on my phone and pretended it was Santa calling to say he knew Jingles fell and needed help getting up. Santa told me to help jingles this once and when Jingles reported in that night Santa would re do his magic. It worked but next time I will def. use the recovery kit!!!

I can’t thank you enough for this!!!!

You have no idea how grateful I am for this. My 3 year old son is now just getting in to the elf and really loving Christmas this year. I walked out to him kissing our elf. I reminded him how we cannot touch the elf. Of course, he told me 6 year old daughter…who flipped out. I reminded them that some of the other elves might help him get back to the North Pole to have Santa give him his magic back. This kit is exactly perfect. You guys are awesome! Thank you does not even cover how grateful I am.
BlazingCakes
This is amazing, thank you for sharing it and keeping the belief alive for our little ones!
Janette
Used it last year with my oldest (now 8) and now I need it for my step daughter, 5. Good thing I pinned this page. I LOVE this! Keep the magic going.
Donnie
My 3 y/o son touched our elf last year and I did something similar to this because my 4 y/o daughter was upset because she know that they weren’t suppose to touch “Bob”… instead of using glitter I used a mixture of cinnamon and sugar and santa left a note to them. When they got up the next morning they were surprised that santa brought “Bob” some more Christmas magic to last until Christmas. This is definitely a great idea!!!
Amy
Thank you so much for all of these great ideas!!! It really helps those who don’t have the time (or creativity) to think of these amazing ideas!!!
Laysha García
How much does it take for your magic elf dust to come from the north pole.
landshark123
Since its Elf magic one would think almost instantly.
Ketutar J
This is just so darling! :´) Thank you for coming up with the idea and sharing it, too. 🙂

Thank you so much for posting this!! I have been so worried how I would handle this situation!!

Thank You for this! My 17 month old was about to throw our’s and my 5 yr old about had a heart attack so he grabbed him. Sigh, so I needed the Elf Recovery Kit “From Santa”. Again, thank you for this!
Tiffany LeAnn Griffin
I was trying to find a letter from Santa to someone with COVID I might have overlooked but if not it would be a great idea.
Pam Dana
That’s a great idea! Next year I am going to highly consider this idea! THANK YOU!

This is such an awesome idea and a real life saver too! My six year old daughter was crying non-stop all afternoon because her two year old brother knocked our elf off the TV (by accident) and TOUCHED him by picking him up. We printed out the recovery kit and can’t wait for them to see our elf’s magic return. Thanks a million! Also thanks to my dear friend who sent me the info about your site.

I have an elf in my classroom this year, and my kids were especially moody one day..and the elf got sick…he left a note saying that because we werent in the Christmas spirit he was heartsick. My kids were devestated…i saw somewhere that someone had their principal deliver the elf (that was really cold from the freezer) so i put the note and the magic dust in the school freezerand had someone from the office deliver it right before we went to PE..the kids were amazed!!! It was so cold..and it was just the right medicine..well the magic dust PLUS our good attitudes! Thanks for creating this!!
Ande
Thank you for helping us (and I am sure many other families) keep the Christmas spirit flowing for our little ones. 😉
Johane Levesque
We had an accidental “touching” of our elf… Except it was by somebody who obviously didn’t know about the Elf on the Shelf. Thankfully the elves don’t lose their magic when touched IF – AND ONLY IF – the person who touched your Elf doesn’t know anything about Santa’s Scout Elves… Our electrician touched our elf, but his kids were grown and he didn’t have grand-children yet, so he obviously recognize the importance of not touching Scout Elves. 😉
Heather
Our girl elf fell today and my husband had to pick her up in front of the kids. I’m now in need of a girl certificate. Help!
Sylvia
My son was the stinker who knocked the elf of the piano and is still a little too happy to have our elf gone. This answers the question of how to get him back for my daughter. Thanks! Super fun!!
A new Elf mommy
You are a magical Elf yourself I must say, to think of this. Thank you for believing.
Stephanie Alexander Belhumeur
I will be putting this to use at nap time today, the first day our elf arrived from the North Pole. My 3 year old could not help herself and just had to touch her, then just broke out in tears when she realized what she had done! Thank you so much for this brilliant idea! And thanks to a friend for sharing your link with me!

Thank you so much for saving us from a night of crying and worry 🙂 Elvis accidentally fell down, and my daughter picked him up before she remembered not to touch. Now, she is devastated. Here’s hoping the magic dust will fix it 🙂

Thank you so much… I’m printing one off “just in case”
Khugg
That is an amazing idea!!!! Thank you so much for this post! Luckily my elf hasn’t been compromised YET, but I see it happening soon with 20 more days and very curious children!
Bramfam4
I could have used this last night! Our Elf fell and my son put his hands up out of reflex and touched him…I “googled” how to get his magic back and off the top of my head came up with:put glitter in a bag (like Pixie Dust), vitamins (to make him strong), a peppermint (his favorite candy), something Christmasy (to remind him of home) and lots of love. They took turns gently shaking him and then we wrapped him in a towel and let him rest.
Kristin Nossaman
This is SO awesome! Thank you so much and it is wonderful that this is offered for free! Merry Christmas!!!!

My 4 year old decided to test the magic of Styx the Elf and touched him today. I am so glad I saw this site last week and remembered about you recovery kit!!!! Tomorrow there will be a very sick Styx (I made him a sleeping and put out meds) along with the recovery dust. At some point in the day, I plan to get him sitting up so that he seems to be feeling better after the recovery dust. I hope she learned her lesson! My kids were both VERY upset when he had to leave halfway through the day (aided by other elves during nap time) to go to the Elf ER!
overthebigmoon
Such a fun way of executing the Kit! Thanks for leaving the comment for me and other readers to see! Here’s to a full recovery for Styx!!
littleboogie24
Thank you so much. Last year we had a similar problem & I couldn’t think of anything clever so I told my kids that Bob would probably not move for a few days until he felt better, This is a much better idea should we have the same issue this year with a houseguest.
Ashley Trevino
Love this idea. Thank you so much.
Heather
We had an Elf crisis as well last year. Thinking on my feet as my daughter cried because her big brother touched our Elf, I grabbed some reindeer food we keep in a container under our Christmas tree. I LOVE this idea even better! Thanks!
Meliss
Thank you so much for making this available for all Santa’s helpers. So sweet and kind of you! Merry Christmas!!!
