As the school year comes to an end and we make plans for the next few months, I am trying to come up with things I’d like the kids to do and learn while they’re home during the day. One of my goals for the summer is to get my kids more involved with keeping our house clean (not just their bedroom). I know if I want to enlist their help I have to make sure we have a simple system in place that they can eventually do on their own.
I created a “short and sweet” checklist for two areas that usually need the most attention. For younger kids, the pictures help them understand which order to use them in. The printable checklists we are going to use focus on the kitchen and bathrooms, but you could use this idea for any room/zone in the house!
One of the easiest tasks kids can help with is wiping down hard surfaces. I don’t know what it is about spray bottles, but my kids love helping if they can spray something! I found some really inexpensive spray bottles in different colors in the travel toiletry section of the grocery store and filled them with kid-friendly cleaners. I matched each color spray bottle to the icons on the cleaning chart so it would be simple to follow. You can add vinyl letters like I did or even label each bottle with a permanent marker!
We always use paper towels so that they can be thrown away after really bad messes (hello, kids’ bathroom!) My personal favorite are the New Bounty Quick-Size Paper Towels, because they make it easier for little hands to help around the house. They’re having a killer deal on Amazon when you use the promo code 5QUICKBOUNTY for $5 off + clip the additional $2 off coupon for even more savings! Click HERE to check it out! I love that I can give my kids a small size that’s perfect for wiping counters, windows and mirrors. In our family, they’re a must-have for quickly cleaning up everyday spills, too!
Another way to keep things organized when your kids are helping is to keep everything in one place. If you have a bucket or bin holding everything they need, it will be easy to hand over to them when it’s time to clean up! You can laminate the checklists and keep them right in the bucket with all your supplies.
