How to Play Football Scattergories
- Prepare the Letters: Cut out the letters from the instruction sheet and put them in a hat or bowl. Close your eyes and pick one letter (or have someone else pick a letter).
- Set the Timer: Use a timer and set it for 3 minutes. If playing with younger kids, you might want to give them a bit more time.
- Start Writing: Look at the Football categories card. Write down words that start with the letter you picked. Each person plays alone, trying to think of different words for each category. I’ve provided cards for two rounds, but you can play more by choosing new letters each time.
- Keep Moving: If you can’t think of a word for a category, skip it and come back later if there’s time.
- Be Unique: Try to think of special or less common words. For example, if the letter is “S,” and the category is “Football Foods,” you might write “Spinach Dip” instead of “Sausages” because it’s a bit different.
- Compare Answers: When the time is up, everyone shares their words. If two people have the same word, they both cross it off. The winner is the person with the most unique words.

Are you ready to ramp up the fun at your Super Bowl party or large gathering? Consider playing Football Scattergories in teams! This not only makes it more challenging to come up with unique answers (imagine trying to be different from 30 other people!), but it also adds a competitive edge and extra excitement.
How to Play Large Group Scattergories
Forming Teams:
- Split everyone into teams. Each team should have about 3-5 players. This size is ideal to ensure everyone’s ideas are heard without too much crowd.
- If your group is larger, it’s a great way to get everyone involved and mingling.
Adjusting the Time:
- Depending on who’s playing (think of the kids and adults in the mix), you might want to extend the answering period. Up to 5 minutes can work well.
- Remember, there’s no strict rule on timing. Feel free to adjust the clock to what works best for your group.
Scoring and Winning:
- Once the timer ends, have a representative from each team read their answers aloud for each category.
- If two teams have the same answer, they both cross it off. It’s all about being unique!
- At the end, the team with the most unique answers claims the victory. Celebrate their cleverness and enjoy the game!
Playing Football Scattergories in teams can turn your party into an unforgettable event, full of laughs and friendly competition. Get ready to huddle up and have a blast!
Scattergories FAQ’s
Scattergories can be played by any number of players, from duo play to large groups. However, it’s typically most enjoyable with 2-6 players.
When playing Scattergories with two people, the game transforms into an exciting head-to-head challenge. In this format, each player focuses on devising unique answers that they think the other might not guess. This direct competition adds an element of strategy, as you’re not only thinking of answers but also trying to outthink your opponent. Scoring follows the traditional method: if both players come up with the same answer for a category, neither scores a point for that answer. This rule further intensifies the competition, making each round a thrilling contest of wits and creativity. As a result, playing Scattergories with just two players can be a highly competitive and engaging experience, where each participant knows exactly whom they need to outsmart to win
Scattergories is generally suitable for players aged 12 and up due to the need for quick thinking and a broad vocabulary. However, if kids are wanting to join, I suggest having younger kids team up with an older partner.
A single round of Scattergories can take 3-5 minutes. A full game, which usually consists of 2-3 rounds, can be completed in about 20-30 minutes.
In case of a tie, players can either share the victory or play an additional tiebreaker round with a new letter and categories.
