Three fun designs to make Custom Hoodies for Soccer Moms using Iron-On vinyl! This is such a fun and easy project to make with your Cricut machine!
This post was sponsored by Cricut. All thoughts and opinions are 100% mine.
Soccer season is here and this soccer mom is now ready to go cheer on her girl with these custom hoodies this Fall! I am always customizing apparel for my kids but rarely do I make anything for myself. So, this was an extra fun day of crafting for me! I put together 3 different designs that I am going to share below, plus I am talking about some fun other ways you could arrange your Iron On on hoodies!
If you’re new to using Iron On, I highly suggest you go check out this post with Tips for Using Iron On Vinyl. It has a ton of good information!
I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 for this project! But, it could be made on the Cricut Maker too. The designs are too big for the Cricut Joy though. I love my Cricut machines because they give me the ability to customize like a boss and make things exactly the way I want. And generally, I can make things like this soccer mom hoodie for cheaper than I can buy one!
Now let’s get making them!
CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN HOODIE
Items Needed:
- Hoodies or Sweatshirts or Shirts (I bought mine on Amazon and Target.)
- Cricut Explore Air 2 (or Maker)
- EasyPress 2
- EasyPress Mat
- Standard Green Mat
- Everyday Iron-On Vinyl /HTV (color to contrast with hoodie color)
- Weeding Tool
- Ruler
- Soccer Designs in Cricut Design Space
Directions:
Start by opening the Soccer Designs in Cricut Design Space.
The first thing you’ll want to do is delete, amend and/or resize the designs to fit your need. Below in the post I give you size recommendations, but I also always measure the area directly on the hoodie/shirt using a ruler.
Once everything is ready to go, hit ‘MAKE IT’ in the top right-hand corner. It will then show a preview of all your different cutting mats. Click through each mat one at a time and move the designs around if needed and mirror each mat. AGAIN – MAKE SURE EACH MAT IS SET MIRRORED.
Put the Iron-On on your Standard Green Mat shiny side down and load the mat into your machine.
Hit ‘CONTINUE’ on your screen and make sure the dial on your Explore Air 2 is set to Iron-On. If you’re using a Cricut Maker, you’ll then select your material on your computer screen. Read all instructions on your screen and confirm your settings. Then hit the ‘C’ button on your machine to start your cuts. Repeat this for each mat.
After your cuts are done, you’ll need to weed all the excess Iron On from the designs from the clear transfer film. I like to use scissors to cut around the design a little tighter, so I have less weeding too. If the design is detailed (like the soccer balls), make sure to reference the design to know which pieces need to be weeded out.
Once your design is weeded, it’s time to transfer the design. Use the Cricut Heat Guide to figure out what temperature and transfer time you need for your EasyPress 2. While you’re waiting for it to heat up, lay your hoodie on top of the EasyPress Mat and work on the placement of your design.
Once the EasyPress 2 is heated up, then quickly apply a little heat under the design, replace your design, and use your EasyPress 2 to transfer the design. Make sure and apply some pressure with your EasyPress 2 while it’s on the design. Then allow the hoodie to cool completely and then remove the clear plastic film.
Repeat for each hoodie and design.
What different types of Iron On Vinyl Can I Use?
From my experience, most hoodies are a Cotton / Poly blend. Which makes it so you can use a lot of different types.
- Everyday Iron-On Vinyl — this is the most universal type of Iron On. If you’re wanting to use a layered design, you’ll want this to always be the base vinyl of your design.
- Everyday Mesh Iron-On — This is such a fun Iron-On choice for anything sports-related. Especially if you’re adding numbers to your designs at all. Plus, it comes in all colors, has a few shape variations (hearts and stars), and also comes glittered.
- Glitter Iron-On — this Iron-On is a fun way to bring some bling to your design. Consider using this as a top layer of a multi-layered design.
- Foil Iron-On — this type of Iron-On will have heads turning! I’ve seen some really fun sports and athletic gear use designs using Foiled Iron-On and they turned out so dang fun.
What size should my design be?
I always suggest measuring the space directly on the apparel that you’ll be placing your design on! However, here is a rough idea that you can use as you determine what is best for your piece of clothing.
- Large Adult size: 11″ x 11″
- Fitted Adult size: 9″ x 9″
- Youth size: 7″ x 7″
- Toddler size: 5″ x 5″
Tips for having Iron On Last
There are a handful of things I recommend to make sure that your Iron On designs last on your apparel.
Wash and dry your apparel beforehand.
Confirm that the type of Iron On you are using is compatible with the type of material you’re placing the design on
An easy way to check that the type of Iron On you’re using is compatible with the apparel material you’re using is by using Cricut’s Heat Guide. You’ll go to this website, select the EasyPress you’re using and the type of Iron On you’re using, and then hit the 2nd drop-down menu for the type of material you’re using. It will only show the materials that your type of Iron On is compatible with. If your material is not in the drop-down menu, then you right away know it’s not compatible.
Use the EasyPress 2 to apply your Iron On
The EasyPress heat plate has an even heat surface that ensures your entire design transfers to your apparel well. Using a regular Iron (which has an uneven heat plate) can result in the edges of your design peeling faster. Read more about this here. Also, I suggest using the EasyPress Mat to make sure the heat is being put into the transfer of the Iron On and not absorbed by the surface under your apparel.
Just before the transfer, preheat your base fabric for 3-5 seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture.
Have your design sit at least 24 hours after application before washing
Lastly, wash your hoodie inside out and never bleach.
Now it’s time to go make your own Custom Hoodies!! If you have questions, leave a comment for me to answer!!
