Summer has us busy with lots of fun activities! But, we still have to have home days a couple days a week. You know… so mom can do the laundry and clean the house! Even though my boys are 5 and (almost) 7, they are still always happy to play with playdough several times a week! I love watching their little imaginations create fun things! This Stay Soft Playdough recipe has been our favorite for years! We’ve tried several other recipes, but always come back to this one!
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
¼ cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 packet unsweetened Koolaid
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Directions:
1) Combine 1 cup flour, ¼ cup salt, 2 tablespoon cream of tartar, 1 packet koolaid and 1 cup water.
2) Turn on medium heat and stir in 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil and keep stirring for 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture forms into a ball. The mixture will darken in color.
3) Remove from heat and knead for a minute or two.
4) Store in a air tight container or ziplock bag.
My kids love this Toolin’ Around Set and they have this fun Create a Monster set, but sadly I can’t find a link for it anymore. It’s sort of like this fun Shape A Pet Set though (fyi-these are all affiliate links)!
Make sure and store the playdough in air tight containers! Snapware works awesome if you have any of it laying around!

I used food coloring instead of koolaid and added essential oil for scent. Great recipe!

Hi!
Is there any way to make this without the Koolaid? Will it be the same if I omit? Unfortunately, my preschoolers love it but think it smells good enough to eat!
Pam Dana
I’ve never made it without the Koolaid – but you could for sure try food coloring! Or just not add color! Good luck!

Hi Pam!
I made this recipe today and it is a HIT! The kids love it and we are having playdough competitions. I had another recipe but it took a really long time to gel together. This one was simple and quick. LOVE IT! Just want to say THANK YOU!
