ENCHILADA SAUCE JAR LABELS
This Cilantro Lime Enchilada Sauce recipe is a reader favorite from my site! You just can’t beat the flavor and I love to make large batches of it and freeze it or can it for later too! Our family and friends love it so much too, so I decided to make some jars to give out to friends this holiday season. It would need a cute label, so I create some customized labels for it using my Cricut Joy and Smart Label Writable Vinyl! I like labels that look a bit more homemade (hygge like) vs professional from the store, so I decided to design a label that would be good year-round. To make it cute for the holidays I’ll just tie a Christmas ribbon around the top of the jar! I tend to go for a simple is more look most of the time!

WHAT IS CRICUT SMART LABEL?
Cricut Smart Label are products that can be written on using Cricut pens or markers! You can have your machine do the writing and drawing or you can even write on it by hand!
There are two different Smart Label products — Cricut Smart Label Writable Vinyl and Cricut Smart Label Writable Paper! The writeable vinyl comes in rolls of white vinyl that are 5.5″ x 48″. The Writable Paper comes in packs of 4 sheets in the Kraft Brown finish that are 5.5″ x 12″ per sheet. Neither product requires a cutting mat.
Is Smart Label Permanent?
Cricut Smart Label Writable Vinyl Is consider a permanent vinyl. Meaning it will last long term, but it can be removed from most surfaces. You may need to clean some of the adhesive off the surface after removal.
The Cricut Smart Label Writable Paper Is labeled permanent, meaning it can last as long as you need. Though it does remove easier than the writable vinyl.
What Cricut Pen should I Use?
For the Cricut Smart Label Writable Vinyl you’ll want to use any regular Cricut Joy Pen or Marker. Cricut Joy Gel Pens or Metallic Markers will not work on the writable vinyl, as they’ll smudge or smear before they can dry.
With the Cricut Smart Label Writable Paper you can use any pens, but I’ve found that the Cricut Joy Pen or Marker still work better than the Gel Pens or Metallic Markers. For the gel pens, just make sure to give them plenty of dry time before you try removing the label for the backing.
MAKING SMART LABEL CANNING JAR LABELS WITH CRICUT
This tutorial is pretty simple, I’m not going to lie! You’ll just click the link to my design, send it to your machine, load the Smart Label, a pen, then load the cutting blade and you’re done!! And it’s super easy to change the number of labels it makes!!
Items Needed to make labels:
- Cricut Joy
- Smart Label Writable Vinyl
- Cricut Joy Fine Point Pens .4
- Regular Mouth 16oz Mason Jars
- Cilantro Lime Enchilada Sauce Jar Smart Label Design Space File
How to Make a Smart Label on the Cricut Joy:
Start by opening the Cilantro Lime Enchilada Sauce Jar Smart Label Design Space File.
At this time go ahead and amend and adjust the design to fit your needs! You’ll want to adjust the size of the label if needed. If you’re going to amend the design of the labels you’ll need to unattach the layers of the design, make the adjustments, and then attach the layers back together. Also, make sure your machine is set to Joy, next to the ‘make it’ button in the upper right-hand corner.
Once all adjustments have been made, save your design. Then hit ‘MAKE IT’ in the top right-hand corner.
Then, because we’re using Smart Label, we can write on the vinyl and cut WITHOUT a mat! So, you’ll select without the mat from the pop-up. I am literally obsessed with Cricut’s Smart Materials line for this reason alone! It makes it even easier to create, make and finish projects!
Now, review the cutting area and if you are wanting to make several sets of the labels, this is where you’ll adjust the number at the top left of the screen. Once the cutting area looks like you want it to, hit ‘CONTINUE’ in the bottom right-hand corner.
The next screen will be where it connects to your machine and where you set your material.
After you choose your cutting material it will prompt you to load the pen into your Cricut Joy and the light on your Joy will begin flashing, prompting you to load the Smart Label Writeable Vinyl. Once both of those are loaded, hit ‘GO’ on your computer screen. After it does the drawing/writing on the Smart Label, it will ask you to load the blade into the machine instead of the pen.
Once they’re all done writing or cutting, then hit ‘UNLOAD’ on your computer screen. Then I like to give the labels at least one minute before I remove the sticker from the backing.
Apply the stickers to your jars and you’re done!
TIPS FOR USING SMART LABEL WRITABLE VINYL
Here are a few tips for using Smart Label to make jar labels!
- Smart Label prefers a flat (flatter) surface to be placed. It can have a little bend on the edges, but nothing too dramatic. I actually tried using a smaller, a little bit more fun jar shape at first and it didn’t work. You’ll see below that we ran into some folding and creases.
- Make sure you’re using the right pen for the right project! There are quite a variety of thicknesses of pens. If you’re making a smaller label like these jar labels, you’ll want to use a .3mm or .4mm pen, not a marker!
- Make sure you’re using writing fonts from within Cricut Design Space. To do this, when choosing your font, click Cricut and turn on the writing filter within the fonts! This will automatically only show you the fonts that do well writing.
- Don’t place the label anywhere where a clip or item is going to be put on top of the label! Although the label is considered permanent, it can still be damaged if messed with too much! You can see in the picture below that I tried using a jar that had a clip top and I immediately knew that wasn’t going to work. It was going to fold over the edge when being put on.
