I love the look and charm of apothecary bottles, but they can be expensive to purchase! So, below I have a link to a full tutorial on how to properly distress bottles to achieve the apothecary look if you don’t already have the bottles on hand to make your potion collection! In this post, I’ll be sharing more details on how to create the Harry Potter Potions using a FREE set of Harry Potter Printable Potion Bottle Labels that I’m sharing below!

4 bottles aged using distressing techniques sitting on a counter.

WHERE CAN I BUY POTION BOTTLES?

I got my bottles at Hobby Lobby and they were 50% off! However, you can easily find these bottles at thrift stores and in your pantry. Really any cool shaped glass bottles work! Then you can order a cork set, that comes with a variety of sizes, off Amazon for pretty affordable.

I also really like these bottles off Amazon:

  • Spherical Bottles
  • Black Bottles
  • Message in Bottle Bottles

HOW DO I DISTRESS BOTTLES TO LOOK OLD?

A major part of making your Harry Potter Potion Bottles look vintage is making sure you distress the glass to get the old and dusty look. If you want to learn how I distressed the glass, check out my post with this tutorial for aging glass jars! I give you 3 different techniques that are super simple!

3 bottles distressed to look old.

HOW TO APPLY PRINTED LABELS TO GLASS JARS?

Now that you have glass jars ready, let’s apply the potion labels that I’m offering today (download below). Print the labels on cardstock and cut them out using scissors. Next, distress the edges of the labels using distress ink. This is optional, but in my opinion, makes a big difference!

Once the distress ink is dry, use an even layer of modge podge on the back of the label and pushed it onto the front of the bottle. Continue to hold the label down for a few minutes and keep checking to make sure that the label has not bubbled up. If a bubble formed, gently press it out with your fingers. After letting it sit for about 10 minutes, put a thin layer of modge podge over the front of the label to make it more durable. Don’t worry if you get a little modge podge on the bottle around the label – it dries clear!

WHAT CAN I FILL POTION BOTTLES WITH?

I filled them with whatever I had laying around the house. You’d be surprised what items look cool:

  • Hair Gel
  • Vinegar
  • Sand
  • Sugar
  • Colored water
  • Rice
  • Wine
  • Water Beads
  • Spider Webs
  • Molasses
  • Oatmeal
  • Coffee
  • Glitter

I’m asking because why wedding is Harry Potter themed, but I’m Brazilian and my mother language is Portugues, so I dont want to use labels written in English, as my guests dont know English 🙁

Thank you! I used these for my bottles and they look amazing! I will have to upload a picture. I am using this for Halloween this year… I bought some acrylic black paint, black glitter, elmer’s glue, a sponge and paint brush… on one bottle I sponged a mixture of the black paint with glitter which gave my bottle texture, on the other I took the paint brush and painted in strokes horizontally and did two coats and then printed the potion names on an antique colored paper with texture, I burned the edges of the paper, glued on with Elmers glue(which also helped with the bottle looking more aged) and for a final touch I burned a red candle and let it drip down the sides of the bottles…and now I have two awesome halloween potion bottles…Thank you for the downloads!!

    >Hey Bethany!
I'm so glad you liked the potions labels. Unfortunately the only think I made with skelegro bottle was a huge squeal in the aisle of the thrift store I found it in! It was already like that.

If you keep your eyes open in the decor sections of the thrift stores you will be amazed what you can find. The Drought of Sleeping death tall bottle is actually a plastic shower gel bottle I spray painted black.

I hope you can find some good bottles!

    >I am so glad I came across your post – you had so many great ideas and easy processes for someone like me to follow! I was wondering how you created the look on your skelegro bottle. It looks amazing! Was it just a lot of paint or glue?
Thank you very much for all of your printables and ideas! They will be fantastic for my Harry Potter themed party when HP7 part 2 is released!

    >We're going to redecorate our basement playroom as Hogwarts (we're huge Potterheads) and I LOVE the potion jar idea. That would look SO cool on a shelf down there. Thanks so much for the printables.
